Abstract: The low cost, high efficiency production of hydrogen for energy storage has been a big concern in recent times. Photovoltaic devices can be used in the photovoltaic-electrolysis process to produce hydrogen. In this work, nanostructured metal oxides based on tungsten have been produced as thin films by the pulsed laser deposition method and subsequently studied. Their properties have been tuned by the embedding of nitrogen ions. Parameters such as laser wavelength, gas composition and laser fluence is shown to influence the chemical and physical properties of the film. The photolytic activity of WO3 and WOxNy thin layers in the photochemical composition reaction of the water molecule was pursued.
