Abstract: All sewage treatment plants produce waste / debris known as sludge during the purification of raw water. Typically, the treatment procedures involve coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation and filtration processes to remove solids (colloidal or sedimentary) from wastewater, followed by chemical and biological processes. In this study, the sludge from the Târgovişte station was studied in order to determine the water content, the elemental composition and the main organic chemical compounds. Two analytical techniques were used: Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (AAS) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometry (FTIR). Heavy metals (Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb) were determined quantitatively by AAS and the results obtained were compared with the limits imposed by the Council Directive no. 86/278 / EEC on the protection of the environment, in particular of the soil, when sewage sludge is used in agriculture. FTIR analyzes revealed the presence of silicon oxide, alumina, ferric oxide and calcium carbonate in the analyzed samples.
