Abstract:
This work describes the experimental steps we carried on during planning of radiotherapy treatment for prostate adenoma by two radiation therapy techniques, namely intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) and three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3D-CRT). A set of treatment plans were compared in terms of dose distributions and dose delivered to critical structures in the vicinity of target volume. To optimize and evaluate the treatment, some figures of merit specific to computerized dosimetry were used. Then, to highlight the main differences, we present and comparatively evaluate the dosimetric parameters for a group of 10 patients subjected to the two treatment methods. To certify that the treatment and the results comply with the well accepted evaluation rules regulating the radiation exposure of organs to radiological risk, and appreciate the dose homogeneity within the target volume, we present examples of dose-volume histograms and the values for the homogeneity index. Previous results and the analysis of our values allows us to conclude that, in most cases, the IMRT technique is superior to the 3D-CRT one.
