Abstract: The aim of the present work is to highlight the benefits of applying PIXE (Particle-Induced X-ray Emission) technique on several dozen samples. As a case study we choose ceramic artefacts originating from several historical periods in the steppe and sylvosteppe regions between the Nistru and Prut rivers [1].
In order to determine the elemental composition a 2.9 MeV proton beam generated by the 3 MV Tandetron accelerator from IFIN-HH was used [2]. The experiment was performed with low beam current, in the range of nA and data acquisition was set at 300 s per sample. Recorded spectra post-processing was carried out with GUPIX software tuned with NIST 679 standard [3,4].
Principal Component Analysis (PCA) suggested the presence of multiple clusters, which most probably indicates different manufacturing techniques developed within the 5 000 years time range.
