Dose shielding calculation for radiotherapy facilities

Abstract:
Radioprotection is a concept used for minimizing exposure to ionizing radiation to the workers and public involved in radiation treatment facilities. Following the ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) rule, it is made out of three principles: justification, optimization, and dose limitation (1). In the design process of radiotherapy bunkers these concepts can be applied by increasing distance from the radiation source or by adding a shielding component between the staff and the radiation source. The setup implied the use of the TrueBeam STX Linac set at a perpendicular incidence with the primary barrier with four types of configurations: open and closed jaws, with and without a water phantom to look at the primary beam attenuation in a supposedly patient treatment simulation. Measurements made at the radiotherapy bunker showed the importance of these rules as well as the influence of the patient presence in primary beam attenuation. The calculations for required shielding and primary barrier transmission factor showed that the weekly averaged dose rate at 30 cm outside the barriers is well within the acceptable limit of shielding recommended by the NCRP (which is set to be lower than a fiftieth of the shielding design value P over a year) (2).
