Abstract:
The solar observatory of the Astronomical Institute of the Academy was inaugurated in 1958, with the construction of the solar dome and the acquisition of Carl-Zeiss telescopes dedicated to the study of solar activity. The inauguration of these facilities took place in a period when the urbanization of Bucharest city was not so strong, and urban pollution (dust and smoke) as well as atmospheric turbulence generated by buildings and streets were not truly a factor influencing solar astronomical observations. With the accelerated urbanization of Bucharest city, problems intensified, and it became necessary to move the astronomical equipment to other areas, away from factors that degraded the quality of observations. The Astronomical Observatory in Berthlot commune (Hunedoara county), was chosen as the location for complementing the range of observations made within the Astronomical Institute of Bucharest. We will show here how the new observatory was born and some of the features that make it a very powerful asset of the Astronomical Institute of the Romanian Academy.
