Abstract:
What are the fundamental building blocks the world is made of? The Standard Model is Particle Physics’ best attempt at answering this question so far, being the result of more than fifty years’ worth of experiments. In this presentation, I discuss the foundations of this theory that explains the electromagnetic, weak and strong interactions between elementary particles. I talk about the fundamental matter particles (fermions) that interact with each other through forces, carried out by bosons, and I briefly present how the particles’ masses are generated through the Higgs field. I also present the current limitations of this model, along with a few possible extensions (e.g. Grand Unified Theories, Quantum Gravity).
