Abstract: In recent years, interdisciplinary approaches in education have been gaining popularity as effective tools for engaging students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. This presentation focuses on a physics-centered educational initiative conducted through a robotics club for high school students, aimed at improving student engagement and understanding STEM concepts.
As a physics student and coordinator within the club, I guide students through experiments, workshops, and projects that blend theoretical knowledge with practical applications. The club not only offers a place for the students to work on building robots, but also as an informal learning environment, where among other things, students are introduced to core physics concepts (mechanics, electricity, energy transfer, etc.) Many sessions have been led by professionals in physics research.
In this presentation we will detail the structure and functioning of the robotics club, the strategies used to convey physics ideas, the outcomes observed in student motivation and comprehension, the different types of activities we experimented with and the results of them. By examining specific projects and the feedback from students, I will highlight how the interdisciplinary collaboration has impacted the educational experience of students. This will also demonstrate how university students can contribute to science outreach directly and promote physics among younger people.
Through this initiative, we aim to bridge the gap between higher level scientific concepts and tangible understanding, using robotics and other experiments both as tools for teaching and as inspiration for continued STEM and especially physics learning.
