Abstract: Laser-driven particle accelerators open a completely new approach in investigating the radio-biological effects of the interaction of radiation with tumours due to the ultra-high dose rate per pulse. The new generation of the multi-PW laser class, where peak laser intensities of up to 10^23 W/cm^2 can be reached, allows the acceleration of protons and 12C at energies within the therapeutic window via several acceleration mechanisms. While ultra-high dose rates of protons can be delivered easily using classical accelerators, delivering 12C at ultra-high dose rates is very challenging.
The possibility of accelerating 12C from different types of ultra-thin targets at ultra-high dose rates using the 1 PW laser from the ELI-NP (Extreme Light Infrastructure- Nuclear Physics) facility will be presented.
