Abstract:
The transition process from fossil-fuel-based energy systems to renewable energy sources is a critical step toward achieving climate neutrality. However, the intermittent nature of renewables such as solar and wind energy presents significant challenges for grid stability and energy storage. Vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFBs) offer a promising solution due to their ability to store chemical energy reversibly. This paper presents a hands-on teaching module designed for Master's students in renewable energy programs, focusing on the fundamental redox processes in VRFBs. The module includes the preparation of vanadium-based electrolyte solutions, electrochemical characterization via cyclic voltammetry, and performance evaluation through polarization tests. Results demonstrate the reversible redox behaviour of V⁴⁺ species and provide insights into the practical operation of VRFBs. This educational approach not only reinforces theoretical knowledge but also equips students with practical skills essential for advancing energy storage technologies.
