Approaching the Contents of the High School Curriculum from the Perspective of the Applications of Nuclear Physics in Medicine

Abstract:
The Physics curriculum for high school has generated many discussions, from the contents (what, how much and when should some chapters be studied) to the proposed learning and evaluating activities. By analyzing both the key competences established for the high school level and the evaluation of the extent to which these are achieved through final exams, it is noticed that there is a discrepancy between what is expected from the trainee, what the trainee wishes and what is actually done. As a subject, Physics imposes a sequence in studying the themes, a certain mathematical apparatus well learnt and good laboratory resources. Yet, in order to be efficient any educational step should focus on increasing motivation and interest for that subject. It has been noticed lately that the current curriculum does not motivate students to continue their professional formation in the field of Physics. Even from high school students should be allowed to study what they would enjoy as a future job and what is useful for the society. One of the domains in which the role of Physics is spectacular is medicine, beginning with the continuously developing, higher and higher medical technology and ending with the modern investigation and treatment techniques. In the present paper we suggest a new approach of the chapter Nuclear Physics, including notions of Nuclear Medicine, without overloading the school curriculum, but by transferring the focus of the presented applications on the modern treatment and investigation techniques.
