Abstract:
A lot of artworks, especially those from big cities, suffered along time great damage mostly because of the pollution. For restoration, nondestructive methods are the most essential, because they don’t influence or modify the surface of the material and thermography is one of them. This work presents a laboratory investigation consisting in non-contact evaluation of the thermal emissivity for the smoke crust layer, laid-down on some stone samples. Dividing the stone in some different areas, covered in various degrees with smoke dust, we can notice that the emissivity changes as the dust layer thickness changes, coming close to cleaned area emissivity. Thermography can be considered a method that can help us monitor the degree of the stone deterioration.
