Abstract:
The aim of this paper is the study of tropospheric ozone concentration for Bucharest, by using data from three air quality monitoring stations: a urban background station (Environmental Protection Agency-EPA) and two traffic stations (Cercul Militar and Mihai Bravu). The monitoring stations are in EPA network of Bucharest. The Ozone (O3) is not usually emitted directly into the air, but at ground-level is created by a chemical reaction between oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOC) in the presence of sunlight. Tropospheric ozone is a major component of smog which is characterized by low visibility and an assortment of human health problems. The data analysis of the ozone mass concentrations was made for daily, weekly and seasonal time periods for two years 2005 and 2008. The results have shown the highest values of ozone concentrations in summer, in weekend and in the afternoon of the day. In 2005 the ozone concentration values were larger than in 2008, because in the 2005 year pollution in Bucharest was larger than in 2008.
