Abstract: Cardiac and respiratory support oxygen to patients with damaged heart and lungs is provided by extracorporeal techniques, such as extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. Permselective membranes used in such devices need to ensure (oxygen and carbon dioxide) and to be compatible with human blood. Meeting the above listed requirements, polycarbonate, polyurethane and butadiene styrene rubber are investigated in order to determine their physical characteristics and membrane preparation conditions. Samples were characterized in terms of structure and thermal stability by measuring the molecular weight distribution, Raman spectroscopy, FT-IR spectroscopy. On the other hand, thermal analysis: differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetry revealed the intervals of thermal stability, glass transition temperature, crystallization temperature. The information obtained is essential in establishing the methodology for processing the polymers in order to obtain selective membranes.
