Abstract: EURONEAR - The European Near Earth Asteroids Research is a project which envisions to establish a coordinated network which will follow-up, recover and discover Near Earth Asteroids (NEAs) and Potentialy Hazardous Asteroids (PHAs) using two automated dedicated 1 metre telescopes located in both hemispheres and other facilities available to the members of the network.
We present the results of the first EURONEAR project to observe Near Earth Asteroids (NEAs) using a 2m class telescope.
Aims.
During a 3 night run at ESO/MPG 2.2m telescope at ESO La Silla equiped with the WFI camera, we recovered and followed-up 15 faint NEAs, mostly classified as Potentially Hazarduos Asteroids (PHAs) and Virtual Impactors (VIs). Besides this primary aim, we identified and measured about 350 known Main Belt asteroids (MBAs) in the observed fields, and have discovered about 450 new MBAs and one possible NEA.
Methods.
Two observers planned and conducted the observing run, processing the images in La Silla in using a pipeline in near real time. To identify the asteroids we used Astrometrica software, distributing the work to a remote team of six people who measured positions which were reported to MPC on a daily basis, within two weeks subsequent of the run.
