Abstract:
In this paper measurements of thermally - induced mean square director angle fluctuactions both far below and very close to the primary supercritical bifurcation to electroconvection of the nematic liquid crystal I52. Closer to the bifurcation there are deviation from linear theory with a smaller γ and with critical amplitude of the applied alternanting voltage more as mean fluctuations of critical amplitude. For the nematic liquid crystal I52 measurements as a function of the conductivity σ of square director angle fluctuactions above critical amplitude suggest a tricritical bifurcation and control parameter increases strongly as σ is approached from above.
