Abstract:
Semiconductor laser diodes are compact and robust devices, easy to use and control but also present numerous limitations: multi-mode operation, mode hopes and broad linewidth. Despite laser diodes can be tuned by varying the temperature and current, the tuning range present gaps due to the mode hopes. For this reason the laser diodes can not meet many applications. This paper will present a simple method for laser diode mode hope observation using common physics laboratory devices. Improvement of laser diodes spectral characteristics by using a Littrow extended cavity will be also presented.
