Abstract:
In this study we have analyzed two cases of major geomagnetic storms (geomagnetic Dst index equal with -203 nT and -353 nT respectively) which took place on May 4 1998 and on October 30 2003. The first storm was associated with three halo coronal mass ejections (CMEs) on the Sun and the second one with one CME. In order to derive the true speed of propagation for these events we assumed that each CME is a sphere which expands self-similar and propagates radially from its source region. The speeds derived from this model were used to calculate the travel time of the CME to the Earth and to compare it with the real travel time (the difference between the time when the CME was registered at ACE and the time when the CME left the Sun). We will discuss possible implication for forecasting the arrival time of the CMEs at the Earth, as well as their interaction with the ambient solar wind and/or other CMEs.
