Abstract:
The self-organizing properties of thermotropic liquid crystals can be used to align carbon nanotubes dispersed into them. The mesoscopic model already presented is generalized to include the effect of length bidispersity of carbon nanotubes on the phase diagram and alignment properties of the dispersion. The free energy of the mixture is written as the sum of the Doi free energy for lyotropic nematic ordering of the two carbon nanotubes species, the Landau – de Gennes free energy for the thermotropic ordering of the nematic liquid crystal and the interaction terms between carbon nanotubes species and the liquid crystal molecules and the nanotubes, respectively. The phase ordering of the mixture is analyzed as function of the volume fractions, the strength of coupling and the temperature.
