Abstract:
Irradiation of carbonaceous materials with nuclear radiation induces various defects having different thermal stability, some of them being quite stable at ambiental temperatures. Depending on the material structure, its impurity content, stable paramagnetic defects can be produced. Their EPR spectrum contains information about the irradiation dose, nature of the paramagnetic defect, the producing and annealing kinetics. The comparison of EPR spectra with the thermoluminescence glow curve gives information concerning the nature of the recombination and luminescence centres. A series of marbles and carbonate samples from different places of Greece have been investigated. Their trace elements content have been used in the analysis of the sample irradiation sensitivity. The Mn ions act as activators for the thermoluminescence yield .
