Abstract: In the current trend of mitigation of GHG for limiting global warming, there are many initiatives including the development of “Green Vessels”. The concept of Green Vessel applies both for new ship buildings and for retrofit activities of the existing vessels. The blasting process is a crucial phase in the treatment of the surfaces of steel plates and has a significant impact on the environment due to the existing blasting media as grit copper slag, sand etc.In the last 20 years there is a new approach based on reusing of glass cullet.Currently waste glass is collected from homes and businesses for recycling. Due to the lack of demand, there is an excess of green colored glass which must be stored or sent to the landfill. The paper includes a report on the results of research activities that have been carried out under the project GREENBLAST - Using Recycled Glass for Pressure Blasting Steel Surfaces and the Waste Produced in Firing Heavy Clay Constructed Products, CIP-EIP-Eco-Innovation-2011.The research activities included selection of samples and analysis of the blasting performance on different types of plates. The results have been compared with the requirements on the quality of the surface requested by the shipbuilding sector and the paint producers.
