Abstract:
Laser modified (assisted) Compton scattering on bound electrons is a radiative process that has received little attention in the literature. Recently, Voitkiv et al [1] have developed an approximate scheme to describe the process in the case of the ground state of atomic hydrogen, in the nonrelativistic regime. They found that a low-frequency circularly polarized laser field of not too high intensity has a substantial influence on the inelastic scattering of incident photons with energy in the 10 keV range. In the work we report here, based on the approximations introduced by the mentioned authors for the dressing of bound and continuum electron states, we are concerned with laser polarization effects. We present numerical results for i) the electron spectrum detected in coincidence with the scattered photon for the dominant geometry (forward electron emission simultaneously with backward photon scattering, the same as in the absence of the laser field), ii) the electron energy distribution for forward emission, when the scattered photon is not detected. In all reported cases, the laser ellipticity has effects comparable to those of the other laser parameters (frequency and intensity). 1. A. B. Voitkiv, N. Grun and J. Ullrich, J. Phys. B: At. Mol.
