Abstract:
This work presents an application of the laser technique of surface cleaning, particularly, of an old icon with serious deterioration and few small decorative metallic objects. Evaluation is done by optical microscopy. Very small details of the inscription have to be protected and usually are sacrificed because classic method - especially, mechanical techniques are much more destructive. This application tests the performance of new equipment with high precision - a dedicated microscope with laser for artwork cleaning and other laser treatment and diagnosis. In numismatics an important characteristics of the surface is the roughness and its porosity after laser cleaning. The structure of the equipment and its characteristics will be presented, too.
