Abstract:
Flat panel detectors are in use for medical applications on X ray imaging; using the flat panel PaxScanŽ 4030E produced by Varian we developed an acquisition system. The original scintillator is a thin layer of DRZ-PLUS (Gd2O2S:Tb) suitable for large X rays fluencies. The aim of this paper is to introduce a columnar scintillator for flat panel detectors able to detect with high efficiency the gamma rays ( 511 keV ); the columnar structure of the scintillator operates also like a light guide increasing the precision on the pinpoint of the gamma interaction. We describe the procedure in order to obtain columnar cesium iodine in a thick layer (2 or more mm) from powder. First results in pictures of gamma interaction and acquisition system are also presented. Applications for this improved flat panel detector may result in position detectors and positron emission tomography.
