Abstract:
We present a review of solar flare behaviour over the 11-yr cycles, together with an analysis of the effects they may have on other solar activity and geomagnetic indices. Our analysis includes a statistical investigation of flare occurence and N-S hemispheric distribution over the last seven solar cycles (no. 17 - 23). Moreover, we try to estimate if there is any connection between the flare activity and the strength of solar cycles, and if flares bring any contribution to the total solar irradiance variation. For that purpose, we studied not only the number of flares occuring monthly and annually, but we also defined an index that estimates the energy emitted by flares in the 1-8 A range. Flare correlation with the geomagnetic storms induced on Earth will be described as well.
