Abstract:
Given a set of observations like frequency-magnitude distributions , one often wants to condense and summarize the data by fitting it to a “model” that depends on adjustable parameters. We consider fitting when the model depends nonlinearly on the set of N unknown parameters aK ,k=1,2,3,…,N . With nonlinear dependences, the minimization process proceed iteratively. The parameters of the nonlinear model are then adjusted to achieve a minimum in the merit function, yielding best-fit parameters. Finally it is developed a procedure that improves the trial solution and Levenberg-Marquardt method works very well in practice to find this specific frequency-magnitude distribution for Vrancea earthquakes.
