Abstract:
We investigate the structure of the Northern Hemisphere atmospheric circulation anomaly patterns associated with the dominant modes of interannual variability in the Tropical Pacific and the dominant mode of quasi-decadal variability in the Atlantic basin. It is shown that the superposition of the atmospheric patterns associated with these modes has an Arctic Oscillation-like structure. We suggest that a part of Arctic Oscillation variability is due to interactions between coupled ocean-atmosphere modes originating in Tropical Pacific and in the Atlantic basin.
