Abstract:
The gas diffusion layer is a carbon based key component in PEM fuel cells and has an important role on water management and gas diffusion. As they display controllable physical proprieties (porosity, density, electrical conductivity), carbon aerogels may replace advantageously the usual carbon paper as catalyst support. The study presents the physical proprieties of different carbon aerogels and membrane electrode assemblies. A carbon-aerogel-Pt supported catalyst with 1 µm pore size distribution and medium Pt loading (0.3 mg/cm2) has been tested. Continous cycling with upper potential sweeps of 1.2 V give a electrochemical surface area of 130 g/m2.
