Abstract:
Accurate gamma-ray spectrum measurements carried out with a p-type closed end coaxial HPGe detector for nuclides with important contributions from X-rays to coincidence summing effects [1] indicate a complex structure of the dead layer of the detector. Full energy peak efficiency computations correlated with coincidence summing corrections computed with GESPECOR [2] support this conclusion. The dependence of the gamma-ray spectrum on the thickness of the Ge dead layer is further investigated in this work. The GEANT 3.21 simulation toolkit [3] was applied for the ideal spectrum simulation in the case of a point source measured with a closed end coaxial HPGe detector. The spectra were simulated for a set of gamma-ray energies spanning the range from 30 keV to 3 MeV. For each energy the dependence of the spectrum on the thickness of the Ge dead layer was investigated. Work for the simulation of the spectra in the presence of coincidence summing effects is in progress.
