Abstract:
A Dual-energy computer tomograph was designed and assembled by Accent Pro 2000 srl in partnership with the Department of Atomic and Nuclear Physics of University of Bucharest and the National Institute of Marine Geology and Geo-ecology. By using a single X-ray tube, a dual energy solid state detectors system, and a set appropriate reconstruction algorithms we obtained dual-energy computed tomography images as well as digital radiographies of unconsolidated sediments core with a diameter up to 12 cm at a spatial resolution of about 0.5 mm. At the same time, by means of a set of six calibrated samples, the error in determining local values of both density and effective atomic numbers was well below 3 %. All these performances recommend this Computer Tomograph as very suitable to be used for a complex investigation of unconsolidated sediments as well as other related geological objects.
