Abstract: In the Research Center “Nuclear Matter in Extreme Conditions”, at the Computing Laboratory we implemented a High Performance Computing Cluster (HPCC). From of the major present tasks of this cluster we consider here those related to the involvement of the research center members in the Compressed Baryonic Matter (CBM) Experiment at FAIR, GSI Darmstadt (Germany), as well as those for teaching purposes, at master, doctoral and postdoctoral levels. The cluster is configured such that it will be integrated in the CBM GRID computing network. This cluster is configured for local parallel computing to meet the needs for extensive Monte Carlo simulations according with the objectives assumed by the research center members in the frame of the work team “Physics – Flow, fluctuations and correlations” of the CBM Collaboration. The implementation of state of the art scientific tools, like ROOT and CBM ROOT, and modern Monte Carlo simulation codes and models for relativistic nuclear collisions enables the using of this cluster for a wide range of teaching activities, too.In this work we discuss the architecture and the way this cluster was configured. We will also present selected Physics results computed using the simulation models implemented on the cluster.
This work was conducted under the project "Doctoratul in Stiinte fundamentale - inceputul unei cariere de varf in cercetare ", financed by the European Union and the Government of Romania from the European Social Fund through "Programul Operational Sectorial Dezvoltarea Resurselor Umane" 2007-2013, grant agreement no. POSDRU/107/1.5/S/82514.
