Abstract:
Silver oligodynamic action consists to strong antimicrobial effect for extremely low metal concentrations. The entire mechanism of this action is still unknown, but his start is the binding of the metal ions to reactive groups of the target cell proteins resulting of the alteration both of theirs structure and function. We show an analysis of the UV-VIS absorbance spectra recorded successively up to 300 minutes, for the BSA-Ag(I) solution system. Spectra show any remarkable changes that can be associated with the evolution of the Ag(I) action. Our analysis proposes a mechanism of the Ag(I)-protein interaction involving homolytic cleavage of the S-S bond and stabilizes an elongated BSA molecule via fine colloidal Ag(I) particles.
